Our protection concepts for electrical battery storage systems

Battery energy storage systems, or BESS for short, play a key role in the dramatically changing sector of renewable energy. They store surplus energy generated by renewable sources such as photovoltaic or wind power plants and feed it back into the power grid when required. As decentralised storage solutions, they are crucial for the stability of the power grid and energy management. One example of this is "peak shaving" (peak load capping). This is where stored energy is used to absorb peak loads in the grid that occur during periods of high electricity demand. The process reduces the load on the grid and avoids overloading it, which leads to a reduction in the required control power.

Battery storage systems are therefore of great importance for the energy industry, security of supply and ultimately for the progress of our energy revolution. As a specialist in lightning and surge protection, we also see ourselves as having a special responsibility in this area and create customised, reliable protection concepts for the holistic protection of battery storage systems.

Lightning and surge protection for battery storage systems

Direct and indirect lightning strikes pose the greatest danger to the sensitive electronics required for charging and discharging processes within a battery storage system. Surges caused by lightning discharges can exceed the dielectric strength of electronic components many times over and cause serious damage. Just one defective component can impair the function of the entire storage system. In order to continue to fulfil their contractual obligations, operators must switch to alternative systems in this case – a potentially very cost-intensive undertaking.

Ensure the availability of battery storage systems and reduce the need for expensive maintenance and repairs.

We develop and implement customised protection concepts against lightning and surge damage – both for utility-scale projects and for battery storage systems. Our solutions are aimed at manufacturers of battery storage systems, planning engineers in the EPC sphere and operators of energy generation systems. Get tailored advice from our experts.
