Protection of digital interlockings

Completely digital and highly automated – from track to train – this is what the railway system of the future looks like.

The goals: more efficient railway lines, more punctual connections and higher transport capacity. Trains no longer run at fixed block intervals, but at the most flexible yet optimal distances from each other. They recognise their surroundings and can be located with high precision. Support from artificial intelligence plays a central role. The entire technology for this is housed in the digital interlocking.

Protect the entire system from faults caused by lightning and surges and prevent the failure of sensitive digital technology.

Solutions for digital interlockings

In digital interlockings, signals are largely transmitted via fibre-optic cables. The track field power supply provides electrical energy to all elements in the track field, such as points, light signals, axle counters, balises and others. The energy supply must be absolutely secure and it is therefore extremely important to protect it against interference from lightning events. To protect the cables from mechanical damage, a metallic rodent guard must be integrated into the surge protection concept.
